How a volunteer movement grew into a powerful organization supporting Ukrainian refugees in the U.S.

From the first days of the full-scale war in Ukraine, thousands of refugees sought safety and a new life far from destroyed cities and occupied regions. America opened its doors, but even with government aid programs, more was needed than just a visa and a ticket. People required information, housing, translators, and human support. On this foundation, the TraNa Relief Association, Inc. was built — a volunteer nonprofit organization that, since 2022, has been helping thousands of Ukrainians start new lives in the U.S.

The Story of TraNa Relief

The story began in spring 2022, when Ukrainian families started arriving in the U.S. en masse under the humanitarian parole program. From the very first days, TraNa’s founder, Natalia Travilina, helped with entry logistics, arranging housing, food, translation, and guidance. Between March and April 2022, her team assisted more than 25,000 people in entering the U.S. legally under temporary humanitarian status.

It soon became clear that help did not end at the border. The real challenges started afterward — finding housing, documents, insurance, schools, and simply understanding how to live in a new country without language skills or resources. Natalia realized that an information hub was needed, one that could work around the clock.

That’s how the Telegram channel MyAssistance was created, where volunteers began answering refugees’ questions. Today, it has become a vast knowledge base, operating 24/7 and supporting thousands of subscribers.

Growth and Development

In December 2022, TraNa Relief Association received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, which allowed it to attract grants and sponsors. Since then, the organization has carried out dozens of projects and events, bringing together more than 2,600 families.

In 2023, TraNa Relief reached a milestone: more than 50 members visited the New York State Assembly in Albany, where they were officially recognized. Assemblymember Michael Novakhov praised TraNa’s efforts as “an example of how volunteerism strengthens communities and reflects the values New York stands for.”

Main Areas of Support

  • Guidance on housing, insurance, schools, and documentation

  • Cultural events and walking tours in New York City

  • Psychological and educational support

  • Legal assistance with housing and status issues

  • Free seminars on taxes and integration resources

Despite growing demand, TraNa Relief operates without stable funding. The organization survives through grants, sponsorships, and individual donations.

Quote

“Three years ago, I could not imagine that one wish to help would grow into a structure with dozens of events, thousands of participants, and recognition at the state level. But most important are the grateful eyes of the people we’ve been able to help,” said Natalia Travilina.
